At NICU Mama Therapy, I am dedicated to providing individual therapy to mamas who are struggling with a current or past NICU stay, birth trauma, postpartum PTSD, depression, and/or anxiety. My Approach
My Approach
My Approach
You are not alone. With experience in a variety of evidence-based modalities, including CBT and mindfulness practices, I help mamas overcome negative thought patterns and behaviors. I teach different coping skills and tools to help you stay present for yourself and your baby. NICU and birth trauma can be lifelong and so learning how to care for your heart and mind are crucial to your healing.
My Story
My Approach
My Story
I am a proud NICU mama. My water broke at 29 weeks and 2 days, and within 9 hours my twins were born, each just over 2lbs. The next few months were full of grief, fear, guilt, and unwavering love. I was desperate to find mental health support and continued to run into dead ends. Once I began to heal, I knew I wanted to offer the support I had needed but couldn't find. I have been there with you.
About Me
Lauren Gonzalves, PhD, LCSW
I'm a developmental psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, and proud NICU mama of 29-weeker twins practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have over 15 years of experience working with children and caregivers as they navigate stress, trauma, and mental health crises. I also have expertise in attachment theory, social and cognitive development, and child mental health.
I’m passionate about supporting other mamas. And I have a window into your experience—I'm here to support you from hospital admission to your journey home. My practice is focused on mamas who have experienced NICU stays and/or birth trauma and on helping you bond with your baby, overcome anxiety, navigate loss and grief, and develop self-empathy and compassion.
Common Issues for NICU Mamas
"Scary Thoughts"
Experiencing scary (or intrusive) thoughts about harm coming to your baby is incredibly common, even in moms without a NICU stay. These thoughts are often very normal but also distressing for moms and lead to anxiety. There are ways to calm your mind.
Anxiety Upon Discharge
You waited days, weeks, or even months for baby to come home and now what? How do you cope without your medical team and constant monitoring? I can help you come home.
Trouble Bonding with your NICU Baby
Having your newborn stage start off in the NICU is jarring and often disrupts your ability to bond right away. We can work on this together. You ARE a good mom and your baby knows you.
Not Feeling Like "Mom" to your NICU Baby
This is especially common when your baby is still in the NICU. We can process this experience and talk about ways to connect with your baby, even when they're still behind plexiglass and attached to so many wires.
Coping Differently than your Partner
NICU mamas and NICU dads often cope very differently. There is no "right" way to cope but it can also feel isolating when your experience or coping strategy is not shared with your partner. Together we will find a shared understanding of YOUR coping and why it makes sense.
Birth/Delivery Trauma
Birth trauma is in the "eye of the mother". Whether you were worried you would die, your baby would die, or the sudden and early birth of your baby left you reeling, there are ways to heal and process. Birth trauma is REAL and there are known ways to treat this special kind of trauma.
